Understanding: [NB The section in italics is intended to 'set the scene' for the person leading a group study. You don't need to read it out the group, unless you think it would be helpful.]
In spite of being the most natural feeling in the world, YOU are NOT the centre of the Universe!
Ever since the start of the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century, there has been a drift of people away from rural farming extended families, towards cities and nuclear families.
Particiularly in the 20th century we have seen the 'rise of the individual' and the loss of close knit communities.
During that time there has been further family breakdown meaning that nuclear families are now under severe pressure ... and there appears to be a growing aching desire for authentic community living in urban or suburban settings.
The church has a real opportunity to be at the forefront of new community living. This is an opportunity to be embraced, but it comes at the cost of giving up much cherished personal freedoms. Are you ready, willing and able?
Application: Look at the two Bible passages that were used on Sunday. They are very familiar.
Spend some time reflecting on what they might have meant to the disciples of Jesus at the time, and how they might apply to us today.
Pick up on the theme of obedience, the possibility of being counted a 'friend of Jesus' and having a healthy heart attitude motivating your response.
What do you think 'losing your life for Jesus and for the sake of the gospel' looks like?
Is there anything that is 'off limits' to God in your life? What does it mean to you to 'take up your cross'?
True freedom, along with joy and promised peace is apparently only available to those who have given up 'everything', but if you get God's 'everything' in return ... how does the exchange look now?
