The churches in the area are working together to provide a winter night shelter for the homeless. This year will be a pilot to see how this could work for the churches and will last for 6 weeks from the 18th December. Could you help?
THIS HAS PROVED SO SUCCESSFUL THAT IT HAS BEEN EXTENDED THROUGH THE COLD SPELL IN FEBRUARY.
All nights of the week are covered, 2 by Horley churches, 1 by Chipstead and 4 by the Salvation Army. The area we are looking to help is the Salvation Army nights as the other nights are managed by the churches in those areas, but if you feel a heart for those areas, please contact the churches as needed.
The homeless will be identified by a number of agencies in the area including Hope2540, churches, police and the benefits agencies. They will be interviewed for their suitability ahead of being referred to the shelter.
Staffing for the evening team which includes setting up will be seven people: two people to welcome, two people to direct in the hall and two or three working in the kitchen. Overnight there will be four, two awake at any one time and two sleeping. Another two/three people will assist in the morning to get the breakfast and clear up.
Bedding will consist of ex-police custody mattresses which incorporate a raised section for a pillow and each guest is given a sleeping bag at the beginning of the R&B WNS to keep. If this is lost then unless there is a good excuse, it will not be replaced. There will be a towel and flannel for each guest.
We will be accommodating up to 10 clients who will be sleeping in the WNS overnight. The clients will be greeted; they then must then sign an agreement after the rules of the WNS are explained to and understood by them. The rules will include the removal of alcohol (this is returned on departure), no leaving the shelter after signing in and no drugs or dogs.
So if you are interested, please come along to one of the info / training sessions, you are welcome to these even if you do not volunteer at all.
